Apricorn has updated it’s Aegis Bio range of portable hard drives by upping the capacity to 640GB.

The Bio Hard drive as the name suggested has biometric security built in that requires authentication before the data can be accessed. By swiping a finger of the sensor you gain access to encrypted files.

The external hard drive is USB 2.0 compatible and is capable of transferring files at speeds of up to 480MBps via a built in USB cable.

The drives have cross-platform support and also an integrated password bank is included allowing you to store all your usernames and passwords protected by biometric security and encryption.

The 640GB model costs $160 while the lower models dropping to a 250GB capacity start at £120.

ezGear is launching a new tablet computer called the SurfBoard. The SurfBoard 700 runs Google Android. It comes with a 7 inch screen as well as WiFi for connectivity.

The SurfBoard is designed to browse the internet, correspond via email and watch movies in high resolution. As the device is Android OS based, it allows you to download apps from the Market to further enhance the device.

Technical features of the SurfBoard 700 show that it has a two megapixel camera that can capture still pictures and digital video. The front of the device is home to controls to help you navigate through the device which also include a built in mouse.

The SurfBoard 700 weighs 17.63 ounces and measures just over half an inch thick. With the device having a 7 inch screen it makes it relatively easy to hold in one hand while working on it. The 7 inch screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

Connectivity of the device includes USB 2.0, USB OTG, HDMI output and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Battery life is quite impressive with the SurfBoard being capable of 20 hours music and 10 hours of video.

Hitachi has introduced a new external hard drive called the LifeStudio which offers some unique features and new user software to enhance functionality. The LifeStudio drive is compatible with both the Mac and PC line of computers and comes with 3D Wall software, a product that will automatically amalgamate your documents, pictures, music and video collections from a variety of different sources including the local hard drives, USB gadgets and social media locations. Once collected, these items are organized in any easy to find arrangement.

In addition to Wall software, LifeStudio comes with both a content management app as well as a backup software solution which seems practical considering that this is an external hard drive. The drives are expected to go on sale both online and in retail locations around the middle of the month. There are 4 drives that comprise the LifeStudio suite of products and these are the LifeStudio Mobile, Mobile Plus, Desk and Desk plus. The drives range in size from 250GB to 2TB and are priced between $79.99 for the entry level unit to $219.99 for the top of the line device.

3TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk External Drive

Seagate has introduced their new FreeAgent GoFlex Desk drive, an external hard drive that has 3TB of storage space. It wasn’t to long ago when the 1TB hard drives were touted as being sufficient for a home users multimedia needs but with the number of digital cameras and high definition video cams, bigger seems to be better.

Just how big is the new Seagate drive? It can hold 120 high definition movies but out of the box, the drive comes with only USB 2.0 support so transfer speeds will not be optimal. However, there are optional upgrades to Firewire 800 or USB 3.0 available and these will come with an additional cost. Compatible with both the Windows and Mac operating system, the 3TB drive includes a driver disk that will allow users to take an NTFS or Windows-formatted drive and enable it for read/write access on a Mac. This is an option for users that are unwilling or unable to format the drive using the Mac’s HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) file system.

$250 is what it will cost to buy the 3TB hard drive and an additional $20-$50 will be required for each optional connectivity interface.
