Sony Bloggie MHS-TS20K

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 26 - 2011

The Sony Bloggie MHS-TS20K bears the classic hallmarks of the pocket video camcorder genre. It has a pop-out USB arm and 8GB of built-in memory. Sony’s video and picture-management software is onboard ready for direct installation, and there’s a big button for starting and stopping your video recordings. However, there are a number of areas where the Sony Bloggie pulls ahead of the most recent Rip camera, the UltraHD.

Where the Rip could only muster 720p HD footage, for example, the Sony records at 1080p; where the Flip had a 2in screen, the Sony sports a 3in display; and where the Rip was plastic, the Bloggie is encased in luxurious aluminum. It’s a beautifully made device, topped off with a couple of crowd-pleasers: the display is touch-sensitive (using capacitive technology), and included in the box is a rather ingenious 360-degree converter lens. Canon Legria HF R28

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 25 - 2011

Canon’s range of 17 HD camcorders is littered with confusing numbers and names. Essentially, however, they boil down to five core models, with slight variations, usually based on the amount of integrated storage. Thus, the Canon Legria HFR28 is all but identical to theHFR26 and HF R206 models, but with more storage – 326B. Bizarrely, the HF R28 is also the cheapest of the range. It comes with the same dual SD card slots as models further up the range, giving you flexible upgrade options. Read the rest of this entry »

Canon EOS 600D

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 24 - 2011

With even entry-level DSLRs boasting enough megapixels for poster-sized prints, manufacturers are being forced to find new ways to tempt upgraders. HD video recording is the current teaser. The 550D first introduced 1080p video recording to Canon’s consumer D5LR stable, but the standout new feature of the 600D is a 3in camcorder-style flip-out screen. It’s bright enough to see what you’re shooting even in the fiercest of sunlight, and you can overlay a grid on the screen to help you keep the horizons perfectly level on those sun-drenched beaches.

However, the 600D isn’t the perfect camcorder. Although Full HD footage (recorded at 24fps) is sharp and well exposed to start, there’s no continuous autofocus. You have to semi-depress the shutter button to force the camera to refocus, or use manual controls. Read the rest of this entry »

Toshiba NB500

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 23 - 2011

The NB500 eschews the dual-core AMD processor and Harman Kardon speakers of its shinier sibling, the NB550D, and plumps instead for a single-core 1.66GHz Atom N455. That provides predictably weak performance. It scored 0.16 overall in our application test, and its responsiveness score was 25% short of its dual-core rivals. Its Intel GMA 3150 graphics won’t let you play high-definition YouTube or iPlayer footage smoothly, either.

The screen is average, with a resolution of 1,024 x 768 and brightness level of 217cd/m2. The gloss finish gives the impression of greater punch than the HP Mini 110, but its contrast ratio is actually inferior. It isn’t a patch on the Acer Aspire One D255′s display. In terms of connectivity the usual suspects abound, with three USB 2 sockets, D-SUB, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.1 In Wi-Fi, but no sign of Bluetooth, HDMI or USB 3. Read the rest of this entry »

Samsung N350

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 22 - 2011

Most people won’t be too concerned by a netbook’s style, but Samsung’s N350 is cut from a different cloth. With an alluring glossy silver lid and a chassis that measures only 24mm thick, the N350 is clearly attempting to appeal to the fashion-conscious buyer.

It’s also the lightest netbook on test, weighing in at only 1.05kg. Build quality doesn’t suffer in the slightest, and both the lid and the beautifully slim base resist heavy-handed twisting and tugging better than many of the chunkier netbooks in the group. Read the rest of this entry »

HP Mini 210

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 21 - 2011

HP’s Mini 210 is slightly more expensive than its super-cheap cousin, the 110, and at first glance only cosmetic changes justify the price hike. The 110′s glossy black has been replaced by a bright blue finish, and the matte interior has made way for chrome-effect plastic.

The 210 has a slicker-looking keyboard and trackpad. The traditional-style keys of the 110 have been replaced by a Scrabble-tile design, and it’s no bad thing: the gaps between the keys aid speedy typing, as do the firm base and responsive keys. The trackpad is just as good and, although we were skeptical about the decision to replace the 110′s physical buttons with a pair built into the trackpad, they’re almost as responsive. Asus Eee PC 1015PEM

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 20 - 2011

The Eee PC 1015PEM is one of the most expensive netbooks on test, but like its sibling, the 1018P, its range of features puts the competition to shame. Asus has squeezed in the kind of high-speed connectivity we’d expect on fully fledged laptops. Two USB 3 ports allow for blazing fast transfers, while Gigabit Ethernet makes for a speedy wired connection. Wireless networking is no let-down either, with both 802.11n and Bluetooth 3. Samsung PL210

Posted by Cool Gadgets On July - 19 - 2011

The line between super zoom cameras and point-and-shoots is becoming thinner by the day. Evidence of this comes in the form of Samsung’s PL210. The 19.7 mm frame hides a 14 MP sensor and a 10X optical zoom lens. The keys are well placed, but the power button is a small and one needs to dig in for it to activate the camera.
