Acer C20

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 31 - 2011

Pocket projectors don’t come more compact than the Acer C20. It’s small enough to fit in a jacket pocket and weighs a mere 168g. The features list is impressive, too, with mini-HDMI and D-SUB inputs, a microSD slot and a rechargeable l.410mAh lithium-ion battery. The problem fortheC20 is that it isn’t very practical. The brightness rating for this DLP-based projector is just 20 lumens, which means under standard office lighting you’ll only be able to project its 854 x 480 picture at a screen size of 24in before brightness tails off. In addition, the picture distorts noticeably in the top-right corner and focus is soft at the extremities of the image. If the price were lower, it might make a decent smartphone or netbook companion, but as it stands it’s far too expensive.

Sony Vaio VPCF21Z1E/B

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 30 - 2011

We’ve seen laptops capable of rendering 3D before, but Sony’s luxurious Vaio is the best so far. It’s a heavy brute at 3.1kg, with striking high-gloss black plastic on its lid and top deck. The latter is offset by a raised rubbery platform, which forms an extended wrist rest and incorporates the trackpad into its length. The pad has a patterned texture to help keep fingers on track.

The display is a great example of what a modern screen should be -irrespective of its high-refresh-rate 3D credentials. But by God, it’s thick. At 13mm deep, the lid alone is about as thick as a MacBook Air. Read the rest of this entry »

Apple iPhone 4

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 29 - 2011

Since its launch, the iPhone 4 has generated heated debate over its merits and perceived problems. Antenna gate, which ended with Apple admitting the phone’s reception problem, seriously damaged the reputation of the brand. Yet the phone continues to sell in its millions, and the reason is simple: it’s very good. The physical design is the first sign that this is something special. With luxurious scratch- and smudge-resistant Gorilla Glass on the front and rear, and an aluminum band wrapping sensuously around the edge, the iPhone 4 is simply in a class of its own. Google Nesus S

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 27 - 2011

For its third foray into the handset market, Google has finally moved away from HTC. Samsung is the search giant’s new best buddy, and the resulting Nexus S is the first handset to sport Android 2.3 -the only phone in these Labs, and on the market for that matter, to do so.
Before you get too excited, however, the changes aren’t dramatic. For starters, performance is largely similar to phones equipped with 2.2. We timed the Nexus S at eight seconds to load the desktop BBC homepage and six seconds to complete the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark. That’s quick, but the phone didn’t feel quite as responsive as the latest HTC phones, with web page zooms occasionally juddering very slightly. Read the rest of this entry »

HTC Desire

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 25 - 2011

In smartphone terms, the HTC Desire is positively geriatric. We first reviewed it in April 2010, and since then a whole army of pretenders to its throne has emerged, including the all-conquering Apple iPhone 4.
The passage of time has been kind to this former champion, however. It’s been upgraded to Android 2.2 on all networks apart from 3, and this gives it a new lease of life. It completed the SunSpider benchmark in seven seconds, and loaded the BBC homepage in the same time, contributing to a browsing experience even slicker than before. It’s ultra-responsive, too. Build quality is pretty good; the 3.7in 480 x 800 screen is scratch-resistant and the finish reasonably hardy. Read the rest of this entry »

HTC Desire Z

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 23 - 2011

The Desire Z seems a bit of an oddball in these Labs. It’s a big touchscreen phone, along the same lines as the Desire, but it also includes a keyboard that emerges from underneath and an optical touchpad for general navigation. That hybridization means it’s a bulky device: it’s the second-thickest phone here and, at 180g, the heaviest too. But where the BlackBerry Torch stumbles in its attempt to combine keyboard and touchscreen, the Desire Z succeeds. Read the rest of this entry »

HTC Wildfire

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 21 - 2011

HTC has so many smartphones on its books at present that it can be tough to tell the difference, but the Wildfire stands out more than most. That isn’t because of its great looks and stunning specification, but because of what you get for your money. For £12 per month and an initial outlay of £20, you get 300 minutes of calls, unlimited texts and 500MB of data on 3. That’s a total of £308 over 24 months, the cheapest to run of any phone in these Labs. Read the rest of this entry »

LG Optimus 7

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 19 - 2011

Windows Phone 7 made its debut a couple of months ago, and it made quite an impression on the PC Pro team. For a mobile OS designed from the ground up in little more than 18 months, it looked slick, was easy to use, and has proven extremely responsive on all the phones we’ve tested so far.
The LG Optimus 7 is no exception. It’s snappy in everyday use and easy to get to grips with, and the hardware is lovely too. A brushed-aluminum panel conceals the battery compartment on the rear, a glossy glass 3.8in screen tops the phone, and below it are the three standard Windows Phone 7 buttons: back, start and search. It all feels very well put together. Read the rest of this entry »

Motorola Defy

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 17 - 2011

Daft names clearly aren’t the preserve of desktop PC manufacturers, but ignore the Defy moniker and this is a gem of a smartphone. Motorola’s latest model has a lovely 3.7in, 480x 854 capacitive screens – that’s a higher resolution than the giant HTC Desire HD – and a lot more besides. If the screen doesn’t catch your eye, the unusual design certainly will. With its exposed screw heads and grippy plastic chassis, the Defy looks more like a rugged GPS than a modern smartphone, but it isn’t just for looks. Read the rest of this entry »

The Symbian operating system may be on its last legs, but Nokia is continuing to make an effort with it. The N8, its latest flagship phone, is a checklist junkie’s dream, cramming in more features than any other phone in these Labs.
Top of the list is the 12-megapixel camera. It has autofocus, a high-power Xenon flash; face recognition and 720p video recording. Images and video both look outstanding, surpassing even the iPhone 4; it’s the best smartphone camera we’ve come across, bar none. Read the rest of this entry »

Palm Pre 2

Posted by Cool Gadgets On May - 13 - 2011

Everyone raved about webOS when it first appeared at the start of 2009, but it hasn’t had a major update until now. The Palm Pre 2 uses webOS 2, and while it isn’t a radical overhaul, it does come with a few rather nifty extras.
First on the list is improved multitasking. Cards from the same application are grouped together in the multitasking view.

If you have five web pages open at the same time, you can see them fanned out like a hand of cards. Likewise, an email composition appears stacked on top of the reading view.
We love the way the Pre 2 takes proper multitasking and makes it easy to manage, and while Android has steadily become more complicated, webOS 2 has resisted the urge to pile option upon option. If ease of use is the order of the day, only iOS can compare. And for sheer speed it matches the fastest phones here, loading the BBC homepage in eight seconds and completing the SunSpider benchmark in six seconds. Read the rest of this entry »
