Kingston, the makers of storage products for servers, personal computers and laptops has always pushed the envelope when it comes to the maximum storage limits or data transfer speeds and their announcement yesterday of a new memory stick was simply in line with past announcements.

The Kingston DataTraveler 310 is the first USB memory stick in the US to offer a storage capacity of 256GB. The new device is an upgrade to the earlier DataTraveler 300 which launched in select consumer markets last summer.

In addition to the storage space, the Kingston USB key will support a read/write speed of 25MB/s and 12MB/s respectively and will ship with Password Traveler software, security software that allows an individual to develop and access a password-protected privacy zone.

The device will work with a variety of operating systems including Windows, Linux and MAC OS X. No information is available regarding the official launch date, but we do know that it will retail for $1,108 which is not cheap, but reflects the price for being on the cutting edge. If you’re not in a rush, as with all technology, we’ll see price drops over time. One can only expect that these larger storage devices will eventually become the norm, especially with the announcements of extreme speed networks on the way.
