We knew Windows Phone 7 was on the way and with it becoming official at the Mobile World Congress, many liked the look and feel of the new phone OS from Microsoft believing that this had the appearance of a modern OS and would be well suited for mobile devices.
At the same time though, some questioned what the new mobile operating system would mean for the likes of Windows Mobile 6.5. After all, Windows Mobile 6.5 isn’t that old and is used on countless handsets. Well, it looks like Microsoft is planning on supporting all variants of their mobile OS, at least for now. As it stands, once WP7 officially launches in a few months, Windows Mobile 6.5 will be referred to as Windows Phone Classic.
This should be good news for both handset makers as well as mobile phone users as they can now rest easy knowing that their investments are safe and supported. It was highly unlikely that any other outcome was possible as these OS usually go through a life cycle with retirement dates being announced in advance. In any case though, it is still good to have this officially confirmed.
It remains to be seen what plans, if any, Microsoft has with Windows Mobile 6.5 once WP7 launches. I guess time will tell.
