Some eight months ago, both Intel and Nokia announced that they would be sharing information and resources about their respective Linux software platforms. For Intel, that was Moblin and for Nokia it was Maemo. Today, the fruition of their labor has resulted in the MeeGo operating system which in terms of name choice, doesn’t sound any better then either of its parent software platforms.
Also announced was that the Moorestown-powered LG GW990 which was originally slated to run on Moblin will now be the first smartphone to utilize the the new operating system.
There are high hopes for MeeGo with Intel representative, Renee James mentioning that MeeGo “is designed to be crossed platform. You will see multiple devices from multiple manufacturers.” Ultimately, the goal of MeeGo is to see multiple mobile devices powered by the new OS including other mobile phones, tablets, laptops and netbooks.
For now though LG is the only major brand to announce a MeeGo device although Nokia has also hinted at the possibility of having one of their own devices down the road.
MeeGo should be rolling out by June of this year and the LG GW990 is likely to be available in the Korean market by the second half of 2010, after which, we should also see it enter other global markets.
